Gimcheon is developed around the upper reaches of Jikji Stream, which runs down taking its source from Mt. Hwanghak and flows into the Gumi and joins Nakdong River. As the fertility of soil around the basin is productive and the farming industry is well developed, agriculture and industries were developed around the Jikji Stream. The water of Jikji Stream has been used for agricultural and commercial water and people took the Jikji Stream valley as the grounds of living.

Situated in inland mountainous areas, Gimcheon shows wide daily and yearly temperature ranges and considerable precipitation. Gimcheon has not been much damaged by wind because it is surrounded by high mountains of Sobaek and Gaya Mountain Ranges. In the summer from June to September, Gimcheon receives 71.1% of the total annual precipitation, providing good conditions for farming and livestock farming. The rainfall of Gimcheon is year average approximately 834.3mm.

Gimcheon is a vital transportation hub, where the Gyeongbu Expressway, Gyeongbu Railway and National Road No. 4 run through. Especially, in 2010, the expected opening of Korea Train Express (KTX) that makes the whole country to half-day life zone will elevate the stature of Gimcheon as the gateway of North Gyeogsang Province.
