In the earliest days, it was rich with natural resources, thus establishing such ancient tribal nations as Sabolguk, Koryong-Kayaguk became prosperous in this area. During the Unified Shilla Dynasty, Sangju was one of the Nine Provinces, and in Goryeo Dynasty, it was one of the Eight Provinces. In Joseon Dynasty, Sangju had already become grand as the capital city of Gyeongsangbuk Province, thus the Mayor of Sangju City held an additional position - the Provincial Governor of Gyeongsangbuk Province.
In 1895, the name of the district was changed to Sangju County. Even though Sangju City was separated from Sangju County in 1986, Sangju City and Sangju County were unified again in 1995 to promote the development of this growing city.
As situated at the Sobaek Mountain Range, Sangju shows the high west and low east. Also, the mainstream of Nakdong River flows through, which makes Sangju fertile granary.
As located in a northwest inland area of Gyeongsangbuk Province, its climate is close to continental climate with a clear cycle of three cold days and four warm days. The annual average temperature is 12~13¡É; the average temperatures in the coldest month, January and the hottest month, August, are around -1.4¡É and 24.6¡É, respectively. Especially as going further into the mountainous area in the northwest region, the winter temperature becomes lower. The annual average rainfall in 2005 is about 1,102.1§®, relatively higher than 1,000§® in the most inland region around the Nakdong River. In the last 10 years, the annual average number of sunny days reached 156 days, demonstrating that vast open fields, adequate rainfall, high summer temperature and a substantial amount of sunlight offer excellent conditions to grow agricultural crops.
Sangju is the transportation hub with Jungbu Inland Expressway and National Road No. 3 and 25, which provide the city the convenient access from all directions.
As of December, 2005, the number of companies registered in Sangju was 6,937 with 23,263 employees. In 2006 alone, Sanju¡¯s trade volume reached US$73 Million with US$41Million in export and US$32 Million in imports. As the advanced industrial complex including the industrialization complex of the resources for Korean traditional medicine is created and the advanced scientific agriculture is promoted, Sangju is being reborn as the foundational central city of the national development.
From the old days, Sangju has been famous for rice, cocoons, and dried persimmon and it was often called as a town of three whites. Especially, Sangju is home to the world-renowned dried persimmon, which is grown and processed under blessed natural conditions of Sangju and boasts sweetness, tender texture, and few seeds. It is accounting for 60% of the nation¡¯s total production volume.
Sanju is exceptional tourist attractions such as Munjangdae in Mt. Sokri where the Great King Sejong recited a poem with both civil and military officers and Gyeongcheondae, one of the most beautiful places around 1,300-ri Nakdong River and numerous rich cultural heritages in which ancestors¡¯ spirits are embedded are harmonized well with the clean natural environment surrounding the city. |
